For thirty years, if you were going out in Aurora, you were pointing yourself toward the Fox River. The riverboat sat downtown, RiverEdge Park pulled the concert crowd a few blocks north, and the newer downtown restaurants filled in around the water. That geography quietly ended on June 24, 2026, when the new Hollywood Casino Aurora opened and the former Fox River riverboat location that had served guests since the early 1990s went dark.
The interesting thing for anyone who already lives here is not that the casino got bigger. It is that going out in Aurora now means picking between three anchors that sit meaningfully far apart. The rest of the summer calendar looks different because of it.
The New Anchor Sits Off I-88, Not On The Fox
The new complex sits near Farnsworth Avenue and Bilter Road, directly across from Chicago Premium Outlets. Hollywood Casino Aurora is a $360 million entertainment destination developed by PENN Entertainment, located across from the Chicago Premium Outlets near the Interstate 88 interchange. If you have been driving past the outlet mall watching the shell rise for the last two years, that is what it was.
Scale matters here because it changes how you plan an evening. The land-based resort features over 1,200 gaming positions, a 226-room upscale hotel, a full-service Drift Spa, and a 12,000-square-foot event center. That is not a stop on the way somewhere else. It is designed to hold you for a night.
The food hall is the part locals should actually care about. Called The Boulevard Food and Drink Hall, it opened with a bench of names that would be a serious lineup in Chicago proper, let alone west of the outlet mall:

- Sorella by Giada, from Giada De Laurentiis
- Antique Taco
- Five50 Pizza
- Pretty Cool Ice Cream
- Urbanbelly, the Korean-American dumpling and noodle concept that originally opened in Chicago in 2008 and specializes in dumplings, noodles and more Korean-American dishes
- Tabo Sushi, which restores the counter-service restaurant that once lived in the Wells Street Market in downtown Chicago, from James Beard Award-winning chef Takashi Yagihashi
Sorella is the sit-down move. The Aurora room seats roughly 170 including private rooms, with outdoor seating, and De Laurentiis has described it as the more formal and refined of her two Illinois concepts, with Joliet's Sorellina meant to be lighter and more casual. The event center already has its first booking on the calendar: multi-platinum rockers X Ambassadors will headline the first show at Hollywood Casino Aurora's new event center.
What The Downtown Blocks Are Doing In Response
The concern the week the casino relocated was obvious. If the biggest single generator of foot traffic moves four miles east to a highway interchange, what happens to the restaurants that grew up around the old location?
The honest answer, based on what has actually opened, is that downtown was already becoming something else before the casino left. Vicolo is the clearest example. It is an Italian-inspired all-day café and restaurant from O&D Hospitality, the group Chris and Megan Curren founded in 2024, building on their Chicago dining experience; their first venture, The Graceful Ordinary, opened in 2021 and earned local and national recognition. That is a St. Charles operator making a specific bet on downtown Aurora, and they made it before the casino move was finalized.
The rest of the downtown map has filled in around a few operators worth naming. Amore Mio at 33 W New York Street is a Latin-Italian concept from Chef Roberto Avila under the Altiro Group. Altiro Latin Fusion sits at 1 S Stolp Avenue. Petit Three Doughnuts has been quietly stacking positive reviews. During Aurora Restaurant Week, held January 20 through February 3, 2026, as the City's second annual event with exclusive discounts and prix-fixe menus at participating restaurants, all of these were on the participating list, along with Craft Urban, Foreign Exchange Brewing, McCarty Mills Taproom, and Touche French Creole.
The practical read: downtown is now a walkable dining district rather than a casino-adjacent one. It does not need the boat to justify a table.
Three Anchors, One Evening

The distance between the casino and downtown is real. Plan for a drive between them, not a walk. That is the single most useful thing to understand about the new summer map.
The RiverEdge Calendar Is Doing The Heavy Lifting In August
RiverEdge has always been the reason to be downtown on a Friday. This August the calendar is unusually thick:

- The Beach Boys on Thursday, August 13
- Australian Pink Floyd Show on Friday, August 21
- Cheap Trick on Thursday, September 10
Earlier in the run, Get The Led Out played July 18 at 360 N. Broadway, and Lauren Alaina headlined on July 5. If you have been in Aurora long enough to remember when the summer concert calendar was thinner, this is a good year to use the season pass math and stop paying per show.
The pairing move worth trying: dinner at Amore Mio or Altiro on Stolp, walk to RiverEdge. The downtown restaurants know the show schedule and staff accordingly.
Two August Weekends That Do Double Duty
Two Saturdays in August stack enough happening in a single day that they warrant being on the fridge.
August 22 is the collision. The Frida Destination Festival Margarita Crawl starts at 5:00 PM at Altiro Latin Fusion downtown. The 3rd Annual Midwest Hops and Hot Sauce Festival starts at 3:00 PM at Wilder Park. You can do both if you plan the driving, or you can pick a lane. The crawl is the more social choice, the hops festival the more grazing-oriented one.
August 29 is quieter and easier to recommend without qualification. The Alley Art Festival runs from noon at Water Street Mall. It is the kind of downtown daytime event that the newer restaurant blocks were built to catch overflow from.
For September, the Moon Festival at Pacifica Square on East New York Street runs Saturday, September 19 starting at 2:00 PM. Pacifica Square has become the Asian dining hub locals rely on and rarely write about, and the festival is the one weekend the rest of the city notices.
The Practical Read
Aurora's summer used to be organized around a single question: are you going downtown tonight or not? The June casino opening broke that binary. The city now has three real anchors, and the calendar between now and Labor Day gives you honest reasons to visit each of them.
The subtler shift is what this means for the downtown blocks. The bet operators like the Currens made with Vicolo was that downtown Aurora could sustain a serious restaurant on its own merits, not as an appendage to the boat. The August RiverEdge lineup and the alley festivals suggest the bet is being ratified. The casino, ironically, may end up being the best thing that happened to the downtown restaurant scene, because it forced the neighborhood to prove it could stand alone.
Either way, the practical answer for the rest of the summer is straightforward. Book Sorella if you have not been. Buy the concert ticket you have been eyeing. Put August 22 and August 29 on the calendar. And if you have friends flying in over Labor Day, you finally have a compact answer to what there is to do in Aurora.
